Life Science Autoclaves

Why use autoclaves within an animal facility?

Life science autoclaves have multiple uses, including sterilising clean caging, animal feed bottles, feed water, bedding and diet (if not already irradiated) for the cage change process. Autoclaves for life sciences will also be used in decontaminating dirty cages, waste and carcasses to ensure waste products can be safely disposed of.

Bulk floor loading autoclaves are an essential component within an IVC (individually ventilated cage) facility as they are large enough to sterilise the complete IVC rack including its air plenums and difficult to reach areas. The autoclave enables a facilities bio-security level to be maintained granting an even higher level of biological control within an animal facility.

Autoclaves are an essential tool for processing items in & out of a barrier and grant the ability to decontaminate BSL2, BSL3 and BSL4 waste.

How to choose an autoclave for life sciences?

What do you need to sterilise?

For example. clean cages, CAT3 waste, liquids, carcasses etc.

Processing requirements

How many items do you need to process per week, over how many days, number of hours per day?

Dimensions

Decide the chamber volume / dimensions you require based on your throughout. Don’t forget the space you have to play with and take a note of the external dimensions of each solution.

Steam requirements

Have a think about how you are going to generate the steam? Do you have steam already or will you need the autoclave to generate its own?

Make your decision

Once you know this you will know if you need an autoclave with an electrical steam generator or are using plant steam already available.

Access requirements

Think about doors. Do you need 1 or 2? Single door or pass through between sterile and non sterile sides?

Facility needs

Think about access to your facility and whether this selection is to replace an existing piece of equipment or buying new for a new build or department.

What is your budget?

We can tailor to your needs. Whether it’s extras you need or cost-effective alternatives- we have the solution for you.

Utility provisions

What Utility provisions do you have available? Think about what provisions you have available and what you would possibly require going forward.
