An ATP Hygiena swab is a market-leading piece of technology used to verify cleaning processes within a diverse range of industries. Each ATP Hygiena swab is designed as a surface test swab or a solution test, so you can monitor processes everywhere!
What is ATP?
ATP is an abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate, an energy molecule found in all living cells allowing cellular metabolism to take place. ATP can be found in all forms of organic matter.
In Healthcare settings, many forms of organic matter are present and can get left on surfaces, including bodily fluids, blood and bacteria. This organic matter can become a point of cross-contamination between patients and staff, possibly leading to Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) if not properly cleaned.
Thus, the inclusion of ATP Hygiene testing after a surface has been cleaned is an essential indication of cleaning efficacy.
What is an ATP swab?
An ATP swab is used to test for the presence of ATP on a surface or within a solution, and as such is used to measure the cleanliness levels of a facility.
The ATP test provides accurate results that define, monitor & maintain cleaning standards within a facility. The presence of ATP on a surface indicates improper cleaning and the presence of contamination, including food residue, allergens and/or bacteria. This implies a potential for the surface to harbour and support bacterial growth.
What ATP swabs are offered by Hygiena?
In Hygiena’s extensive portfolio, they offer several ATP surface and solution test swabs, each offering its benefits, including:
Hygiena SuperSnap™ (100 Box)– The most sensitive ATP surface test in Hygiena’s portfolio.
Hygiena AquaSnap™ Free (100 Box)– Measures non-microbial ATP in a solution
Hygiena UltraSnap™ (100 Box)– A user-friendly, all-in-one ATP sampling test
Hygiena AquaSnap™ Total (100 Box)- Measures both free ATP and microbial ATP in solutions
How does an ATP test using Hygiena products work?
There are three crucial elements to an ATP surface test: the luminometer, bioluminescence chemistry and the test device design.
The ATP Monitoring System by Hygiena joins an industry-leading photodiode with superior liquid-stable chemistry and the patented test device, to produce the most accurate ATP monitoring system on the market.
Hygiena’s advanced testing devices contain a natural enzyme found in fireflies, which then produces a simple bioluminescent reaction when it encounters any ATP remaining on a surface. This reaction then admits light as a bi-product, and the light is then measured within the luminometer.
Using an ATP Hygiena swab, ATP gets taken from the surface, which then reacts with the Luciferin/Luciferase residing at the top of the test. The reaction emits light as a bi-product. The light is then measured within the luminometer.
Measuring the amount of bioluminescence from an ATP reaction provides an excellent indication of a surface’s cleanliness, as the quantity of light generated by the reaction is directly proportional to the amount of ATP present within the sample.
The reaction is immediate, and results can be processed directly at the test site and returned in seconds. Results are shown as a numerical value on the luminometer screen as Relative Light Units (RLU).
