Who is this course for?

This course is for engineers who already carry out weekly tests on porous load sterilisers and now need to perform quarterly periodic testing. It suits engineers working towards appointment as a Competent Person (Decontamination), whether in-house or with a service provider.

Aims & Objectives

To enable delegates to meet their responsibilities and carry out quarterly periodic tests on porous load sterilisers as defined in HTM 01-01.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
  • Define the standards and legislation that apply to porous load steriliser testing, including HTM 01-01 Part C, BS EN 285 and BS EN ISO 17665
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of key personnel under HTM 01-01
  • Explain the quarterly test requirements and their acceptance criteria
  • Fit thermocouples through the test entry gland and position sensors in the chamber and test pack
  • Set up and verify data loggers, pressure transducers and temperature reference probes, including calibration checks using a heat block and pressure calibrator
  • Carry out thermometric tests and air detection system function tests
  • Interpret recorded cycle data against acceptance criteria and complete test records

FAQs

What is the difference between weekly and quarterly steriliser testing?

Weekly tests confirm the steriliser is working correctly between periodic tests. Quarterly tests add independent thermometric measurement: calibrated sensors record chamber and load temperature and pressure through the cycle, and the results are checked against the acceptance criteria.

Who carries out quarterly tests on a porous load steriliser?

Quarterly periodic tests are normally carried out by a Competent Person (Decontamination). The AE(D) and AP(D) for your site confirm who is appointed.

What test equipment is used on the course?

Delegates use the instrumentation required for quarterly testing. This includes data loggers, thermocouples with an entry gland, pressure transducers, a temperature reference probe, a heat block and a pressure calibrator.
