Who is this course for?

Sychem’s washer-disinfector periodic testing course gives engineers the essential skills and knowledge to carry out weekly testing, delivered by experts in the decontamination of reusable medical devices. It’s suitable for engineers who are new to washer-disinfector testing and for those already carrying out weekly tests without formal training, such as in-house estates and EBME engineers, SSD technical staff and field service engineers.

You do not need to have completed a previous course. On completion, you can progress to SYC-WD-P – Washer-Disinfectors – Periodic Testing.

FAQs

What is a washer-disinfector?

A washer-disinfector is an automated machine that cleans and thermally disinfects reusable surgical instruments before inspection, packing and sterilisation. Washer-disinfectors used in the NHS must meet BS EN ISO 15883 and be tested to HTM 01-01 Part D.

What tests are carried out on a washer-disinfector each week?

Weekly tests include safety checks, an automatic control test and a cleaning efficacy test. Your site’s written test schedule and the manufacturer’s instructions set the exact sequence.

What is A0?

A0 is a measure of thermal disinfection lethality. It combines the temperature reached and the time held at that temperature into a single value, so different time–temperature combinations can be compared.

What course comes next?

SYC-WD-P – Washer-Disinfectors – Periodic Testing. It covers quarterly and yearly testing, thermometric measurement and final rinse water quality.

Do I need previous experience to attend?

If you don’t have experience in this sector, we recommend an introduction/ refresher course, so you are familiar with the sector and equipment. If you have previous experience in this sector and with this equipment, this course is a good entry-level course.
